Birth: Tian Bao was born on June 2, 2016, at Paradise Park in Belgium, making him the first giant panda cub born in the country. His arrival marked a significant moment in international panda conservation efforts.
Naming Ceremony: On September 15, 2016, during the traditional Chinese festival of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Tian Bao was officially named. The name “Tian Bao” translates to “Heavenly Treasure,” signifying him as a precious gift from above. The naming ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Qu Xing, the Chinese ambassador to Belgium, and Regina, the director of the Asia-Pacific Department at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Extension of Lease: According to an agreement, Tian Bao was expected to stay at Paradise Park for four years before returning to China. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his return was delayed. On February 3, 2022, Paradise Park announced that, following an agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association, Tian Bao would continue living in Belgium throughout 2022.
Back to China: In a recent announcement on February 20, 2024, Paradise Park revealed that Tian Bao, along with his twin siblings Bao Di and Bao Mei, is set to return to China in the fall of 2024.
