Birth and Naming: Bao Bao was born on August 23, 2013, at the Washington National Zoo in the United States, the offspring of the beloved giant pandas Tian Tian and Mei Xiang. On December 1, 2013, the zoo held a special celebration to mark Bao Bao’s 100 days of life, which included a naming ceremony. The name “Bao Bao” translates to “precious” or “treasure,” reflecting the affection and significance placed upon her. The event was notable, with congratulations sent from prominent figures, including Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States.
Early Life: From the moment she was born, Bao Bao quickly became a star attraction at the zoo, drawing large crowds of visitors eager to see her. On January 18, 2014, she was officially introduced to the public, receiving an enthusiastic welcome from zoo-goers. However, in December 2014, Bao Bao experienced a frightening incident when she accidentally touched an electric fence. Startled, she climbed a tree to escape, where her mother, Mei Xiang, comforted her until she felt safe enough to come down.
Independent Living: In March 2015, Bao Bao began the transition to independence, separating from her mother, Mei Xiang, and starting her own life.
Journey Home: On February 21, 2017, Bao Bao left her birthplace, the Washington National Zoo, and embarked on a significant journey aboard a special flight, dubbed the “Panda Express,” to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The following day, she arrived at the Dujiangyan Base in China, where she was warmly welcomed. On March 24, 2017, Bao Bao made her first public appearance in her new home, showing signs of contentment in her new surroundings. To celebrate her fourth birthday on August 23, 2017, her caregivers organized a special party, marking her first birthday celebration since returning to China. In 2018, she relocated to the Wolong Shenshuping Base, part of the China Giant Panda Garden.
