Intriguing Details of Panda Yue Yue

Name Origin: Yue Yue’s name, which means “happiness” or “joy,” perfectly reflects her cheerful personality and delightful appearance. She is the fifth panda born at Chimelong, which is why she’s affectionately called Little Five. The character “Yue” also sounds similar to the abbreviation for Guangdong Province, symbolizing her birthplace.

Appearance: Yue Yue has a distinctively round face with a thick coat of fur that enhances her cute appearance. Although her stature is petite, her long limbs give her a graceful presence. When sitting, she often tilts her head back with a broad smile, making her look incredibly sweet and inviting.

Shy and Elusive: Despite being a popular attraction, Yue Yue is known to be elusive, as she primarily appears in the cable car area and often chooses to stay hidden from visitors. This makes close encounters with her somewhat rare. However, the caretakers at Chimelong adore her and ensure that she receives the best possible care and attention.

Drainage Princess: Yue Yue has some quirky habits as well. One of her favorites is spending time in the drainage ditches within her habitat. She often brings her food into the ditches to enjoy her meals there, earning her the nickname “Drainage Princess.” However, this preference for damp, dark places has led to some health issues, such as seborrheic alopecia, affecting her eyes due to the low light and humidity.

Picky Eater: Yue Yue is very picky when it comes to food. Her favorite is apples, followed by bamboo leaves, and then the bamboo joints on the bamboo stalks. Carrots and bamboo shoots are eaten depending on her mood, but she absolutely refuses to eat Wowo Buns. To encourage her to eat bamboo leaves, her keepers even sing to her, but she still picks only the tenderest tips of the bamboo leaves.

Apple Happy: Because Yue Yue loves apples so much, her nannies gave her the English name “Apple.” However, her previous nanny thought this name was too plain and renamed her “Apple Happy,” meaning she gets happy whenever she sees an apple.

Close Bond with Keepers: Yue Yue’s keepers adore her and always arrive early to select the largest and freshest food for her. During the summer, to prevent her from getting too hot, they even bring her back inside early to cool off with air conditioning. Yue Yue has developed a strong bond with her keepers, who often praise her cuteness. She also seems to understand her keepers’ words and interacts with them.
