Panda Jun Zhu

Jun Zhu (郡主), a female giant panda born on September 6, 2003, has become an important figure in China’s panda conservation efforts. Born at the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center’s Hetaoping Wild Training Base, Jun Zhu has not only contributed to panda breeding but also continues to be a key player in the global effort to protect this beloved species. Her story is one of steady growth, successful relocation for conservation programs, and the birth of several cubs, many of whom have gone on to further the preservation of giant pandas.

Basic Information

Life Experience of Panda Jun Zhu

Birth: Jun Zhu’s early life was spent at the Hetaoping Wild Training Base, where she was born in 2003. This base is one of the main centers dedicated to the training of pandas for eventual reintroduction into the wild.

Move to Bifengxia: On March 31, 2015, Jun Zhu was transferred to the Ya’an Bifengxia Base of the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, where she began to receive more specialized care and attention.

Move to Wolong: On May 16, 2017, Jun Zhu was moved once again, this time to the Wolong Shenshuping Base for further breeding and care.

Breeding Achievements of Panda Jun Zhu

Yang Hua (阳花): Female cub born on August 25, 2010. On August 25, 2014, Yang Hua and her companion Yun Tao (云涛) were transferred to the Huaying Mountain Wild Release Training Base.

Ya Jun (雅郡): Female cub born on September 6, 2015. On April 19, 2018, Ya Jun and her companion A Jie (阿杰) were transferred to the Ningbo Yageor Zoo.

Meng Meng (梦梦): Female cub born on July 23, 2017. Meng Meng was sent to Shijiazhuang Zoo on September 27, 2019.

Nuo Mi (糯米): Female cub born on September 3, 2019. Nuo Mi used to share the same room with Shun Shun (顺顺), and together they often created the classic scene of two stubborn pandas blocking the door.

Zhi Zhi (志志): Female cub born on July 22, 2020. Zhi Zhi inherited the family’s distinctive disconnected shoulder strap pattern from his grandfather. He also serves as the image ambassador known as the “Panda Hero,” a title awarded by the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League.

Xin Bao (鑫宝): Female cub born on July 22, 2020. In April 2024, Xin Bao and another panda, Yun Chuan (云川), were selected to be sent to the San Diego Zoo in the United States.
