Intriguing Details of Panda Jiu Jiu
Little Foodie: Jiu Jiu is a left-pawed giant panda, which makes her look quite unique when grabbing bamboo to eat. She once secretly munched on pomegranate leaves in her enclosure without a hint of caution, eating a lot. Not long after, she rolled her eyes and dozed off.
Dancer: Jiu Jiu is known as the “dancing queen” of Hongshan Forest Zoo. She often stands on wooden structures, rubbing against poles as if performing a pole dance. The more people watching, the more enthusiastically she wiggles.
Clean Freak: Jiu Jiu is very particular about cleanliness. When it rains, she quickly climbs trees to avoid getting muddy. Even when heading back after “work,” she moves carefully, trying not to splash any mud.
Dedicated Worker: Jiu Jiu is diligent during work hours but values punctuality when it’s time to clock out. Once, her keeper called her back late after her shift had ended, and Jiu Jiu got visibly upset – no amount of coaxing could cheer her up. She sat sulking against the glass wall, her belly puffing in and out with frustration.
Move to Nanjing: On September 30, 2017, Jiu Jiu and her twin sister He He were relocated to the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. There, they quickly adapted to their new environment. In 2018, to celebrate her third birthday, the staff at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo organized a special celebration featuring delightful treats, including a “chilled birthday cake,” making it a memorable day for her and her admirers.
