Intriguing Details of Panda Jing Jing

Naming Background: On November 12, 2005, the day after the Beijing Olympic mascot “Fuwa Jing Jing” was unveiled, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding decided to name a young female panda cub “Jing Jing” in honor of this momentous occasion. The base submitted an official registration to the global giant panda lineage management organization, and the name “Jing Jing” was approved, giving this beautiful panda her unique place in the giant panda genealogy.

Biography: On July 17, 2008, Jing Jing’s home at the Chengdu base became the center of excitement with the release of the popular science book “I Am Jing Jing – A Panda’s Growth Portrait.” The book, in which Jing Jing played the main role, featured over 60 photographs documenting her growth from a tiny cub into a beautiful, adored panda. The book narrates the touching story of how she grew up under the care of her “father, mother, grandparents,” and her “siblings” and human friends.

Seasonal Hobbies: Jing Jing loves taking baths in the spring, playing with toys in the indoor area during the summer, rolling on the grass in the autumn, and playing in the snow during the winter. She is absolutely adorable!

Life Experience of Panda Jing Jing

Sports Family: Jing Jing grew up healthy and strong under the loving care of her parents and the staff at the Chengdu base. Her mother, Ya Ya, was named in connection with the Beijing Asian Games, symbolizing her birth during a significant sporting event. Her father, Kebi, was named by former International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Move to Bifengxia: On July 31, 2007, Jing Jing moved to the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center’s Ya’an Bifengxia Base.

Travel to Nanjing: On April 18, 2008, Jing Jing was sent to Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo in Jiangsu Province. On March 26, 2009, Jing Jing returned to the Ya’an Bifengxia Base.

Settle in Weihai: On September 1, 2009, Jing Jing took China Southwest Airlines flight 3U8915, flying late at night to Qingdao Liuting Airport. The next day, she was transferred by car to Weihai Xixiakou Wild Animal Park, where she began her new life.

Breeding and Offspring: In adulthood, Jing Jing successfully contributed to the giant panda population by giving birth to several cubs. On August 2, 2015, she delivered a pair of twin cubs. After a global naming campaign held online, these twins were named Jing Ao (晶奥) and Jing Yun (晶运), further cementing their connection to the Olympic legacy. On July 10, 2017, Jing Jing gave birth to another cub, a male named Jing Liang (晶亮).
