Life Experience of Panda Cao Cao

Birth: On July 25, 2018, He He and his twin sister Mei Mei were born at the Hetaoping Field Training Base. At birth, He He weighed 215 grams. He made history as one of the first surviving twin pandas born from a captive panda mating with a wild panda, a breakthrough in genetic diversity for the species. This achievement earned He He a place in the 2021 Guinness World Records Hall of Fame.

Naming Ceremony: On December 26, 2018, the twins were officially named He He and Mei Mei by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He He’s name was inspired by the famous panda character from the Chinese animated series “Panda and the Mole.” This was also the day He He and Mei Mei separated from their mother, Cao Cao, as she went to prepare for the next year’s wild breeding program. He He was extremely active and curious, constantly exploring – roaring at the keeper once and falling off the wooden structure twice. Mei Mei was also exploring but was relatively more cautious, falling off only once. When she fell, she visibly bounced a little.

Important Mission: As the offspring of two wild-born pandas, He He has a highly valuable bloodline. He was designated early on as a breeding male at the panda base to help increase genetic diversity among captive pandas, earning him the nickname “Noble Prince.” However, he has shown little interest in female pandas so far and prefers to play by himself in the mating enclosure.
