Giant Pandas “Panda” Hong Kong

With the central government gifting Hong Kong its third pair of giant pandas, “An An” and “Ke Ke,” and the birth of panda cubs “Jia Jie” and “Xi Lao” by the resident pandas “Ying Ying” and “Le Le,” Hong Kong now boasts six giant pandas, making it the city outside mainland China with the most national treasures. This presents a great opportunity for the development of the “Panda Economy.”

Giant panda figures can be seen everywhere in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has incorporated panda elements into major festivals, including Mid-Autumn Festival lantern displays, drone shows, and more. Various sectors of society have also launched panda-related activities and products.

For instance, the “HELLO PANDAS” outdoor carnival and “PANDA GO! Hong Kong Tour,” featuring 2,500 panda sculptures on display throughout various districts, have attracted attention from both locals and tourists.

At Hong Kong Ocean Park, the 100-day celebration for panda cubs “Jia Jie” and “Xi Lao” saw red eggs and ginger vinegar being distributed to visitors as blessings. The event also arranged for “Le Le,” the panda father, to meet the public for the first time, creating a lively and joyous atmosphere.

The “Panda Economy” refers to the development of an industrial chain centered around the giant panda, including cultural and creative products inspired by pandas. This initiative also contributes to the growth of experience-based tourism and supports the diversification of tourist attractions.
