Early Life: From a young age, Yuan Zi stood out with his impressive stature and serious demeanor. Despite his initially intimidating appearance, he has revealed a more endearing side as he matured. Yuan Zi’s strong yet gentle nature, combined with his charming antics—such as the playful sounds he makes when competing for food—has made him a favorite among visitors and staff.
Travel to France: On January 15, 2012, Yuan Zi, along with the female giant panda Huan Huan (欢欢), traveled to France’s Beauval Zoo as part of a ten-year China-France giant panda breeding cooperation program.
Life Abroad: In France, Yuan Zi quickly became a star attraction at Beauval Zoo. His graceful demeanor and unique charm captivated countless visitors. The love story between Yuan Zi and Huan Huan has also been a highlight of their time in France.
Breeding: During their time in France, Yuan Zi and Huan Huan successfully gave birth to three giant panda cubs, including Yuan Meng (圆梦), born on August 4, 2017, and Huan Li Li (欢黎黎) and Yuan Du Du (园嘟嘟), born on August 2, 2021.
Extended Stay: In April 2023, after successful negotiations, both China and France agreed to extend the pandas’ stay until 2027, allowing Yuan Zi and Huan Huan to continue their time at Beauval Zoo.
