Third Naming Campaign for Giant Pandas Gifted by the Central Government Launched

On October 2, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Kevin Yeung, announced the launch of the third naming campaign for the giant pandas gifted to Hong Kong by the Central Government. The campaign will run from October 2 to October 27. The aim is to gather ideas from various sectors to find more fitting names for the two giant pandas.

Yeung stated that participants in the naming campaign must submit their proposed names along with a 100-word explanation for their choices. Participants can also suggest that the pandas keep their original names and provide an explanation for the meanings behind them. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government will establish a dedicated committee to oversee the naming process. The best submissions selected by the committee will become the official names for the two giant pandas.

In addition to the naming campaign, the HKSAR government will host a panda-themed drawing competition, inviting participants to showcase the adorable side of giant pandas through their artwork. The competition will be divided into three categories: primary school, secondary school, and open groups. Participants are required to submit their hand-drawn artworks between October 21 and November 8, accompanied by a brief description in Chinese, not exceeding 100 words, explaining the meaning behind their creations.

The two giant pandas, originally named “An An” and “Keke,” arrived in Hong Kong on September 26 to settle in their new home. They are currently undergoing a period of isolation and adjustment, with plans for them to meet the public in December.
