A Surprise Encounter on the Road

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on January 23. Mr. Lü, a villager from Taoyuan Village in Bainixiang, Beichuan County, was driving home after attending a family reunion dinner. As he approached a bend in the road, he spotted a blurry figure moving uphill. Within seconds, Lü stopped his car, realizing the figure was a wild giant panda casually wandering along the village road.

Moments later, the panda appeared to notice the headlights, paused, and turned to face the vehicle. After briefly locking eyes with Lü, it turned back around and disappeared into the darkness. The entire encounter lasted just 18 seconds.

Living Near Panda Habitat

Taoyuan Village, where the encounter took place, is located near the core area of the Giant Panda National Park’s Mianyang section. Mr. Lü explained that the village, which was recently merged with another, is divided by a river. In the original Taoyuan Village area, sightings of wild pandas are not uncommon. However, on the other side of the river, where Lü’s home is located, such encounters are extremely rare.

Having lived on the river’s far side for over 50 years, Lü had never before seen a wild giant panda. “I’ve only come across panda droppings and fur,” he said.

A Memorable and Lucky Experience

This was Lü’s first time seeing a wild giant panda, and the timing—just before the Lunar New Year—made it even more special. “It’s a sign that the environment in the village is improving,” he remarked. He extended an invitation to visitors, saying, “Come visit Mianyang and Beichuan to see the giant pandas!”

After his encounter, Lü promptly reported the sighting to local authorities. In response, the village issued safety reminders to residents, advising them to be cautious while also avoiding any interference with the giant pandas.

This heartwarming moment not only delighted Lü but also highlighted the harmony between humans and wildlife in the region, showcasing the importance of conservation efforts in Sichuan.
