Intriguing Details of Panda Sheng Yi

Naming Ceremony: Sheng Yi’s name was decided during a naming ceremony attended by Malaysia’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Takiyuddin Hassan, and the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The name symbolizes peace and friendship, reflecting Malaysia’s desire to further strengthen its relationship with China.

Smart and Clever: Sheng Yi is very intelligent and quickly learned how to open the door to enter the activity area. Sometimes, she even “closes the door and shuts out the guests,” refusing to come out. This leaves the keepers feeling quite helpless. Moreover, she also packs her toys and brings them back to her enclosure, as if afraid the visitors might steal them.

Well-behaved and Thoughtful: On August 29, 2023, Sheng Yi embarked on her journey back to China. During the farewell ceremony at the Panda Pavilion in the Malaysia National Zoo, both Sheng Yi and Yi Yi were very well-behaved, almost as if they knew this would be their last appearance in Malaysia.

Social Butterfly: After returning to China, Sheng Yi became a noticeable and lively figure at the Shenshuping Base. She is often seen running freely across the grass, climbing over walls to play, or climbing trees to observe what the neighboring panda, Xiao Qi Ji (小奇迹), is doing.

Energetic and Playful: Sheng Yi is extremely agile. When she was in Malaysia, she even managed to escape from her enclosure. At the Shen Tree Terrace Base, she has successfully scaled the iron gates three times, only to be caught by the keepers each time. Last winter, when it snowed, Sheng Yi mastered various skiing skills, often making herself dirty in the process.
