Intriguing Details of Panda Gao Gao

Refusal to Return to the Wild: After living in the reserve’s management center for two years, efforts were made to reintroduce Gao Gao to the wild. However, he seemed to have developed a deep attachment to humans, repeatedly returning to the center for food and shelter. Even after being driven over 400 kilometers away to be released into the wild again, Gao Gao managed to find his way back. Along the way, he would stop by villagers’ homes for meals. Ultimately, Gao Gao was officially accepted into the panda conservation program, becoming a panda with “special privileges.”

Playful Grudges: During Gao Gao’s upbringing, caretaker Yang Wenfu provided him with constant care and attention. However, due to the repeated attempts to release him into the wild, Gao Gao seemed to hold a “grudge” against his caregiver. Whenever someone mentioned “Caretaker Yang” in front of him, Gao Gao would immediately turn his head and walk away, appearing “angry.” Despite this, it was all an act. Once, after returning to the base, Gao Gao noticed that Yang did not greet him as he usually did. In response, he sat stubbornly at the gate, puffed up with anger, waiting for his caretakers to come to him.

Documentary and Impact: Gao Gao’s inspiring journey was documented in the film “Returning Home,” which captures the heartfelt interactions between him and the caretakers. This documentary showcases his remarkable experiences, highlighting the emotional bond formed between Gao Gao and his caregivers.
