Name Origin
Oreo’s name was chosen through a global naming campaign. On October 19, 2012, the Chengdu Panda Base invited people worldwide to name a panda born on the first day of the London Olympics (July 28, 2012). The event attracted nearly ten million participants, generating over 8,000 name suggestions. “Oreo” was the top choice among voters, and on October 29, Chengdu Panda Base officially named the panda cub “Oreo.”

Juvenile Years
As a cub, Oreo was known for his lively and mischievous nature. He enjoyed playful fights with his companions, climbing trees, and biting. His energetic and dominant behavior earned him the nickname “Little Tyrant.” Over time, Oreo’s personality mellowed, and he now has a new nickname, “Mother Cat Oreo,” reflecting his more gentle demeanor.
Move and “Coal Mining”
On December 30, 2015, Oreo moved to the Dujiangyan Breeding and Release Research Center (Panda Valley). There, he formed the “Coal Mining Group” with his younger siblings, Miao Miao and Yuan Run. The trio often played together, rolling around and getting dirty, which led to Oreo being called “President Oreo.”

Since his birth, Oreo has been a media sensation. His distinctive 16:9 facial structure, long eyelashes, round face, and well-defined eye circles have set him apart from other pandas. On February 4, 2014, he made a memorable appearance on CCTV’s “News Broadcast” alongside his peers, showcasing his playful side.
