Moscow Zoo Celebrates Giant Pandas’ Birthdays

According to a report by Russian news agency TASS on July 30, Svetlana Akulova, the director of Moscow Zoo, announced on the social media platform Telegram that the zoo is celebrating the birthdays of giant pandas “Ruyi” and “Ding Ding.” The celebrations will continue until August 4.

Akulova wrote on the 30th: “Today, the entire Moscow Zoo is celebrating the birthday of our lovely giant pandas.” She added that “Ding Ding” is turning 7 today and weighs 125 kilograms. This panda is described as a “perfectionist with high standards and a bit of a temper,” but is also a “great mother.” Currently, “Ding Ding” spends all her time caring for her daughter “Katya.”

Akulova noted that “Ruyi” will turn 8 on the 31st and weighs 140 kilograms. Since arriving in Moscow from China, “Ruyi” has remained the same, always being a “kind and cheerful guy, though he has become a bit sleepier.” The director also mentioned that the celebrations include themed tours, puzzle games, master classes, film screenings, and gifts for the birthday pandas. The Moscow Zoo has invited visitors to join the master classes and create tasty treats for the giant pandas as gifts.

Female giant panda “Ding Ding” was born on July 30, 2017, at the Wolong Shenshuping Base in Sichuan, China. She, along with giant panda “Ruyi,” arrived in Moscow on April 29, 2019, starting their 15-year residency.
