The giant pandas “Yuan Chuan (云川)” and “Xin Bao (鑫宝)” have successfully adapted to their new environment and various foods at the San Diego Zoo in California over the past three weeks.
The Chinese Association of Wildlife Conservation’s WeChat public account released a third-week quarantine journal on the 17th, revealing this information about “Yuan Chuan” and “Xin Bao.”
According to the quarantine journal, under the meticulous care of a team of experts from both China and the United States, the two giant pandas are in normal physical condition and good health. Whether they are strolling in the garden of the quarantine area, tasting bamboo on the climbing frames, or basking in the sunlight among the tree branches, “Yuan Chuan” and “Xin Bao” display a state of ease and contentment. In terms of behavior training, “Yuan Chuan” and “Xin Bao” have also gradually established a good interactive relationship with the members of the care team.
In late May, staff at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s bamboo base in the United States harvested bamboo.
According to the introduction, Chinese and American experts selected more than ten types of bamboo from the two bamboo bases of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance for “Yuan Chuan” and “Xin Bao” to choose from. Based on expert observations and data analysis, “Yuan Chuan” and “Xin Bao” showed the most preference for golden bamboo, umbrella bamboo, and small arrow bamboo. They have also grown fond of the “American version” of steamed corn buns made according to Chinese recipes and processes.
A relevant person in charge at the San Diego Zoo stated that the zoo is not only a world-renowned zoo but also a certified botanical garden. “The bamboo grown in the park can fully satisfy the appetites of the two giant pandas.” They also expanded the original panda pavilion by four times to create a lush, vibrant new home for “Yuan Chuan” and “Xin Bao.”
