Giant pandas “Bao Li” and “Qing Bao” are in their third week of quarantine at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and remain in good health, with all vital signs normal. Both U.S. and Chinese experts are involved in sourcing, preparing, and storing the pandas’ food. Bao Li and Qing Bao are eating well, with a diet consisting mainly of bamboo, supplemented with treats like steamed buns, apples, and carrots. Their current favorite bamboo varieties include arrow bamboo, golden bamboo, and black bamboo.

After adjusting to partial outdoor activity areas, the entire outdoor space has now been opened for the pandas to explore, which they seem to enjoy. Bao Li has taken to climbing and playing on a bed frame, often leaning on tree stumps while snacking on bamboo. His activity level is particularly high in the morning, when he explores trees or rolls around with toy balls on the grass. Qing Bao, meanwhile, prefers to sit on logs, basking in the sunlight and peacefully admiring the autumn leaves. Occasionally, she climbs the rocks near a waterfall, enjoying the seasonal landscape.
Both pandas are adapting well to their environment, and their behaviors show that they are comfortable and engaging naturally with their surroundings.
