Giant Panda “Wu Wen” Gives Birth Again in the Netherlands

Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, a small town in central Netherlands, announced on the 15th that the Chinese giant panda “Wu Wen (吴雯)” living at the zoo recently gave birth. This is “Wu Wen’s” second cub since 2020.

According to a press release from Ouwehands Zoo, a giant panda cub was born on the evening of the 12th local time. Both “Wu Wen” and her cub are currently in good condition in the birthing room.

The press release stated that “Wu Wen” and the male giant panda “Xing Ya” naturally mated at the end of February this year. In the following months, “Wu Wen” showed signs of pregnancy, such as reduced activity and food intake, and increased sleep, but the zoo was unable to confirm the pregnancy. Before giving birth, “Wu Wen” became increasingly restless, and then “a lively, screaming cub was born.” Over an hour later, another much smaller cub was born but unfortunately died soon after.

The press release mentioned that “Wu Wen” and her cub are currently in postpartum isolation and resting, so the gender of the cub is still unknown. The cub’s gender will be determined during its first health check.

“Wu Wen” and “Xing Ya” arrived at Ouwehands Zoo in 2017. Their first cub, “Fan Xing,” was born in May 2020. “Fan Xing,” a female giant panda, returned to China in September 2023.
