According to the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, Tong Tong (彤彤), a male giant panda born on August 30, 2004, at the Wolong Walnut Flat Base, unexpectedly fell ill and died on the morning of June 12, 2024.
The report states that on the afternoon of June 12, veterinary experts from the panda center, along with specialists in anatomy and pathology from Sichuan University, conducted a necropsy and sampling on Tong Tong’s body. Based on the pathological, epidemiological, and toxicological test results, and considering the findings from the necropsy, it was determined that Tong Tong died due to gastric outlet obstruction and significantly increased stomach content. Additionally, he had hemorrhages and acute inflammatory changes in multiple organs, including the pancreas, stomach, duodenum, brain, lungs, and kidneys, along with severe multi-system dysfunction. Ultimately, these conditions led to respiratory and circulatory failure.
