Giant Panda “Fu Ru” Passes Away Due to Multiple Organ Failure

On August 17, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding announced that giant panda “Fu Ru” passed away in the early hours of August 16. On the morning of August 12, Fu Ru was observed lying down for an extended period and exhibiting signs of lethargy. The panda care team at the base conducted a thorough examination and discovered that Fu Ru had a gastrointestinal infection accompanied by a bleeding disorder, with her platelet count dropping to one-twentieth of the normal value.

The base then collaborated with interdisciplinary experts from several top hospitals to provide continuous diagnostic and treatment support. Despite the round-the-clock efforts to save her, Fu Ru could not overcome the crisis and succumbed to multiple organ failure caused by severe bleeding due to extremely low platelet levels and coagulation issues.

Fu Ru was gentle and beloved, and her second birthday was approaching at the end of August. May she be free of pain and enjoy health and happiness in the panda realm.

Fu Ru was born on August 29, 2022. Her mother, Fulu, was born on August 8, 2013, and is known for her sensitive personality, love of cleanliness, and fondness for climbing trees. Fulu has had two pregnancies, resulting in three cubs. The first cub is Fu Shuang, followed by the twins Fu Wan and Fu Ru. Furu’s older sisters, Fushuang and Fu Wan, have also garnered much attention, especially Fu Wan, who is particularly cherished due to her congenital spinal deformity.
