Giant Panda “An Bao” Diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, Surgery Successful and Currently Recovering

On December 16th, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda responded to online inquiries about the recent condition of giant panda “An Bao (安宝).”

Since mid-October, “An Bao” had shown symptoms of reduced appetite and excessive sleepiness. Subsequently, the panda center moved “An Bao” to a non-exhibition area for further treatment.

After consulting with experts from several renowned hospitals and relevant fields, a diagnosis of hydrocephalus was confirmed. Following a course of conservative treatment with medication, there was some improvement. However, as the hydrocephalus worsened, it severely impacted his mobility and feeding, posing a threat to his life. In order to save “An Bao’s” life, on December 2nd, the panda center, along with field experts, performed a ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery. After the surgery, with anti-infection treatment and continuous 24-hour care for two weeks, “An Bao” showed significant improvement, with his energy, appetite, and activity levels greatly restored.

It is reported that the ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery is the first of its kind performed on a giant panda. The procedure was highly complex, with no prior precedents to follow. However, the postoperative results have been very successful, not only bringing new hope for “An Bao’s” survival but also accumulating valuable experience for future treatments of hydrocephalus in giant pandas. Due to “An Bao’s” lively and active nature, and the fact that he will need to carry the shunt tube for life after the surgery, there remains an unprecedented challenge in maintaining the stability of the shunt tube and ensuring long-term effectiveness.

Born on August 15, 2022, at the Panda Center’s Wolong Shenshuping Base, “An Bao” is the son of giant panda Zhang Ka (张卡), and is Zhang Ka’s only male offspring. He also serves as a biological safety volunteer for the promotion of giant panda conservation.
