The third pair of giant pandas gifted to Hong Kong by the central government, “An An” and “Ke Ke,” have been in Hong Kong for two months. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced on his social media platform on the 27th that the pandas will officially meet the public on December 8.
Lee shared that he, along with his wife and Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, recently visited Ocean Park Hong Kong to see the pandas. He noted that both pandas are energetic, lively, and playful. The Sichuan Treasures Pavilion, supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, has also introduced various new features and enrichment elements to enhance their environment. According to the park, the pandas have quickly adapted to their new surroundings and are in good condition.
Lee also mentioned that the naming and drawing competitions for the pandas, organized by the Bureau of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, have concluded. Ocean Park, as a co-organizer, received over 22,600 naming suggestions and 3,000 drawing submissions. The enthusiastic public participation reflects the strong affection for the pandas.
He added that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and Ocean Park will hold a “Giant Panda Welcome Ceremony” on December 7, during which the pandas’ names will be officially revealed. The pandas will make their public debut the following day. The competition results will also be announced at the ceremony.
