The Giant Panda Family “Happy Family” in Macau

“‘Happy Family’ is the most famous family in Macau.” In the Shipa Wan Outdoor Recreation Area, there lives a family of giant pandas, consisting of four members: “Kai Kai,” “Xin Xin,” and their two cubs, “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang.”

On April 30, 2015, the central government gifted Macau two giant pandas, “Kai Kai” and “Xin Xin,” who arrived in Macau by special plane from their hometown in Chengdu.

“The arrival of the giant pandas in Macau was a joyous occasion. From building the facility to arranging their transportation, we spent a long time preparing. It took us over three months just to find a suitable vehicle to transport the pandas,” said Chan Hoi Fung, Director of the Natural Conservation and Research Division of the Macau Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, recalling the scene when “Kai Kai” and “Xin Xin” first arrived in Macau nine years ago.

“I was deeply moved when the cabin door opened, and I finally felt at ease,” he added. A year later, “Xin Xin” gave birth to twin panda cubs, a major event for the entire population of Macau. The Macau Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau held a public naming campaign for the cubs, naming them “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang.”

“In the breeding and care of giant pandas, it’s not only our efforts but also the support provided by the country,” Chan noted. To better care for the “Happy Family,” the Macau Giant Panda Pavilion has established a regular communication and training mechanism with the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base.

During Chinese New Year and other traditional festivals, the Macau Giant Panda Pavilion prepares bamboo-based snacks for the pandas. Mooncakes are made for the Mid-Autumn Festival, and cakes are made for the New Year, allowing the pandas to experience the festive atmosphere as well.

The “Happy Family” is not only the “joy” of Macau’s citizens but has also become an emotional bond connecting Macau with the mainland. Mo Yongxian, a local resident, said, “This year marks the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to China. As citizens, we have witnessed Macau becoming more prosperous and livable. I hope that like the pandas’ names, everyone in Macau remains happy and healthy!”
