When China collaborates with international partners on giant panda conservation and research, meticulous planning and arrangements are essential for transporting pandas overseas. Prior to departure, specialized institutions must custom-make transport crates. These crates are typically placed in the pandas’ enclosures to allow them to become familiar with the environment and smells. Sometimes, the crates are even subjected to simulated movements and sounds to mimic the conditions of air travel.
During the transportation process, it is crucial to maintain a quiet and swift operation to minimize the pandas’ exposure to external stimuli such as noise and flashing lights. Additionally, food is used to soothe the pandas’ emotions. Upon arrival at the airport, pandas are given priority for rapid and safe inspection. The crates are clearly labeled with the panda’s name, lineage, and other individual information to ensure that the panda is among the last to board and the first to disembark.
Throughout the journey, a veterinarian and caretaker accompany the pandas to provide care and monitor their well-being. They carry sufficient bamboo, water, and other necessary food items, as well as essential medications. After landing, customs and immigration procedures are promptly handled, and the pandas are quickly transported to the designated quarantine facility for further observation.
