Life Experience of Panda Wu Gang
Wu Gang was rescued in 2000 from Baoxing County, Sichuan, and was subsequently transferred to the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center for specialized care and rehabilitation. In 2001, he was officially placed at various bases of the research center, experiencing multiple relocations, including stints at the Chengdu Zoo, the Walnut Flat Wild Training Base, and the Bifengxia Base in Ya’an. During the final stages of his life, Wu Gang resided in the isolation area of the Dujiangyan Base, enjoying a relatively quiet and comfortable living environment.
Health Status of Panda Wu Gang
Discovery of Illness: At the beginning of 2023, a growth was discovered in Wu Gang’s mouth, accompanied by bleeding during feeding. This abnormal condition drew the attention of panda conservation workers. After multiple consultations with a team of experts, Wu Gang was diagnosed with malignant osteosarcoma, a disease extremely rare among giant pandas and challenging to treat.
Treatment Process: In an effort to save Wu Gang, the expert team performed two tumor reduction surgeries, but the recovery results were not promising. Given the rapid growth of the osteosarcoma and the lack of successful treatment cases for oral osteosarcoma in giant pandas, the expert team ultimately decided on an interventional treatment plan to slow the progression of the disease.
Passing: Despite receiving aggressive treatment and attentive care, Wu Gang’s condition continued to deteriorate. On October 29, 2023, he passed away peacefully, concluding a life filled with challenges and hope. Wu Gang had actively participated in the giant panda breeding program during his lifetime, contributing to the continuation of the panda population. Statistically, he fathered around 40 offspring.
